"It was just a bowl of cereal!" I said. "I spilled one bowl of cereal on the living room floor and by dad begins shouting that I'm irresponsible, lazy, unhealthy, and sloppy. You would think I did it intentionally and planned to leave it there for a week." I remember telling this story to my best friend, Marty Collins, when I was sixteen. I often escaped to his house to take a break from the pressures at home. My dad always seemed to be hollering at me, but the minute I set foot in Marty's house, a sudden calm came over me. I always looked to Marty and his family for support. They were always there to listen and lend an open mind. His house had become a place for me to develop a long-standing relationship, learn problem-solving skills and acquire independence.

Marty was always a great person for me to vent to because as a teenager, he had the ability to thoroughly understand my side of the story.
