Media representations of violence pervade societal consciousness. Current research indicates that while both males and females alike are depicted as victims of such violence, further study finds support for the conclusion that, within specific media genres, females are disproportionally targeted as objects of violent acts and displays. Furthermore, it is often the case that violence is coupled with sexual displays. Specifically, either the violence perpetrated against females occurs during or following a sex act or the female?s reaction to the violence itself is sexualized. Current research regarding slasher films concludes that such representations are considerably more violent against women than mainstream media portrayals. Furthermore, a large percentage of these violent portrayals are sexualized when coupled with a sexual act or display.
