I suspect my mother told the Gopher-the short, round, crudely cropped woman who lived just down the street and remained her only friend when the whole structure crumbled. It must have been on one of their Saturday excursions to the Indian casino upstate. With the Gopher's form snuggled agreeably into the car interior, and my mother's thin body resisting all accommodation, she began to relate the tale of her second virginity. What she wanted to describe was her body being parted, giving passage, rejoicing in the fulfillment of the space left barren by my father for so many years. But she couldn't. My mother could not possibly have described anything but the act itself. Her language is scarce and flat, leaving her body unfulfilled, lacking, thin in the wrists and shoulders, shaved too close in the facial muscles.
