Thesis Question:

Should educators allow the use of calculators in the classroom? What are the advantages and/or disadvantages to both sides of the debate?

To use calculators or to rely on traditional methods of computations is a very compelling issue that is being heavily debated by educators, administrators and parents. There are two clear sides to this debate and I will label them the calculator proponents and the calculator critics. I plan to examine, interpret and analyze both sides of this controversy. I will provide evidence and opinions that support both sides as well as the underlying issue that both proponents and critics have lost sight of.

The philosophical question over the use of calculators in classrooms is a very unique topic and has been debated for almost thirty years. (Center for Mathematics and Science Education 2001).
