Testing, Testing? Danger, Danger

Recently, it has come to my attention that the success of education is being based around test scores. Anne Arundel County is a prime example of this new focus. Paying Eric Smith, a man known for improving students? standardized test scores, $300,000 a year, Anne Arundel County hopes Smith can eliminate the achievement gap that separates Blacks and Hispanics from Whites and Asians (Johnson, 2002). The method Eric Smith is planning to use to gauge improvement is the performance of students, who take standardized tests. According to Smith, higher test scores will correlate to academic success (Johnson, 2002). However, I am quite skeptical of his method and proposal; I do not believe that improved test scores are the answer, nor do I believe curriculum should have the goal of preparing students for a test. By basing the effectiveness of education on test scores, I fear students will lose their fervor for learning, and teachers will be slaves to test scores.
