How does ?The Woman in Black? create feelings of suspense and shock in
its audience?

The Woman in Black uses many techniques to hold suspense and to shock
the audience. These include using the effects of sounds, light,
actions and the characteristics of the play. However there?re seven
examples that stand out. For example when Arthur was in Eel Marsh and
started to talk about the house, everyone became silent in the
setting; this would show how many of them knew of the house. This
makes the audience wonder why it is so well known but no one is
willing to tell him why; which would give the audience the first hint
of a horrible thing happening or have happened.

When the woman in black first appeared, it would start to enforce the
fact that there is something horrible there. The scene was set during
the burial of Jennett Humphrey; hinting out that it is the ghost of
Jennett Humphrey, making people wonder about what she will do and what
she wants.

After Sam Daily gives Arthur, Spider as his companion, he returns to
the house of Jennett Humphrey?s. When Arthur falls asleep, the dog
jumps onto Arthur warning him about something. Animals are known for
its natural instincts to sense for disasters or things we cannot see.
This makes the audience think of what it could be; is the dog playing
around or is it serious.

Suddenly, a sound of a rocking chair rocking starts. The audience will
be shocked as there is no one else in the house; they would wonder
