The Need for Reform of Affirmative Action

Though a tremendous disparity exists between the average standardized test scores of white and those of certain minority students, I do not believe that affirmative action holds a solution to any problem other than public relations. I believe that race should not be a factor in academics because such a criteria does not raise standards for lower scorers, but rather lowers them.

I believe that the one major factor responsible for the great disparity in test scores is the economic condition of many minority students. It seems that those who are not exposed to quality education and given further enriching resources do not score as high as wealthier students who are given more opportunities and resources. However in an attempt to "integrate" schools that traditionally have very few minorities, such as Ivy League Universities, special consideration is given to black students demonstrating academic success. However, many minorities scoring high enough to receive special attention from colleges are not in economic straits. Many come from high income families and attend expensive private high schools, given a greater quality education than most other people of any race. They do not face more hardship than anyone else as they proceed through high school, yet are given special recognition for race. Those who are left behind are once again the poorer, inner city minorities. This demonstrates the flaws of rewards based on race. Rewarding higher income students, it once again leaves behind poorer inner city minority students. If a rewards system is to be instituted in standardized testing or college admissions, it should not reward skin color but rather something that is relevant to a student's academic success, such as economic status.

A problem such as disparity of test scores should not be confused with the test itself but with the quality of education lower scoring students are receiving. Minorities, often poor and living in poor school districts, do not receive the type of quality education afforded by other students in wealthier areas. The teaching standards should be raised so as to equalize success on such tests throughout races and economic classes. Rather than lower standards, such "preventive" measures will equalize the scales and void the need for any special consideration.
