University Education and Writing
In doing the comparison metaphor of what an university education is like to me I choose a minimum wage job. After about twelve weeks later I would say that this is still what I believe and that I have really not changed that much in my thinking. By using the metaphor of a minimum wage job in describing an university education I feel it best describes my feelings towards school and why I am here. I dealing with my description of my self and the self I portray in my writing I am a person who writes what he wants to say. I never leave out anything, or try to cover up anything I write from within and If someone doesn't like it then too bad because this is me.
I the analysis of my first paper I saw an education as something that I wouldn't want to spend the rest of my life doing; like a minimum wage job. Let me explain. I fell into college and because of that I do not always find attending school "enlightening or fulfilling." I think I get this from my roots of blue collar workers in my family and how my grandfather was self sustaining. He always stressed the importance of schooling but, he also stressed the unimportance of learning anything that didn't relate to the sciences and mathematics. He considered university education as something that one needs to enter certain work forces, but he commonly referred to many educated people as "educated fools"; which were people who knew a lot out of books but nothing about the real world and common sense. You can think of those people being the environmentalist compared to the ecologist. An environmentalist has no formal training or training in management of ecosystems and wildlife but an ecologist does and thus can make more informed though out answers to many of our environmental problems.
In further analysis of my paper I said,
"For me my university education has been an experience that would never take away. I was able to find myself, to escape the judgments of the powercrats who run people down and weaken the spirit."
This was a very powerful style of writing for me because I hate those people who think that they are better than others and those people who feel that because they are educated they must know more and in general be smarter about a lot of things. I chose the word weaken for describing the spirit because I have seen powercrats run down the working Joe down, and how they treat others with a "I am better than you", attitude. This angers me and gets me sick to think that because of financial reasons and good schools the powercrat was able to better him/herself but they never learned what it is to have hardship and financial restrictions which determine what school one attends whether he/she will go to school at all.
The overall general style I uses in writing my paper could be compared to a campaign speech or a advertisement describing university education and my goals for life. I stated that my goals are simple and almost Amish in nature. If I am anything in this life of mine I am religious and hard working. Nothing has ever come easy for me and that includes my education and my current financial security. I wasn't born with a silver spoon and I was taught by my grandfather that the only way I am going to do well in this life is by God and hard work. Using my Catholic religion I am able to separate the truths that many of us cling too and realize that the way I write, the way I behave, and the person I am is determined by my faith not the law set up by the courts. I am and will always be a simple person who wants nothing more out of life that a good family, a loving wife and I want to be able to enjoy myself and not worry about money like my mother did.
In the consideration of my writing and the self I am and the self I portray, I am exactly the same person. I write from the heart, and only if I writing becomes unimportant do I change the person on the page. I write in a very casual fashion and try not to use complicated words, because unless I need to, I feel that they are just showing off and lessening my true self and meaning. I do enjoy my education and the lessons I have learned and even though I choose a minimum wage job for my metaphor do not let me down grade the importance of becoming educated. It feel that we never stop learning and in the future when we are gone and graduated I will never stop learning. Just because you do not have to buy a text book or attend a certain class at a certain time doesn't mean we should stop learning. There is always something I want to learn and always something new I want to try. If this helps, I was always the kid who wanted to try every hobby or sport. My mom would ask me to pick one or two things, but I couldn't because there are so many things that interest me.
You see! This all traces down to my roots. They have shaped the person who writes for you today. I am not like a person in a mask who hide themselves from society, nor am I a composer who constantly makes up new notes and moves onto new territory. I am Stephen Hildre, a honest, down to earth guy who doesn't like the hype of cities and wishes to simplify his life whenever he can. I get my kicks out of catching an eight pound walleye and I enjoy a beer every now and then.
