Plagiarism and the Internet

The stealing of ideas and words has become a very hot topic throughout the United States education system in recent years. The Internet in particular has provided an open forum for ideas to be rehashed and sold as original work. This work is available to students who submit it in hopes of getting an easy A without doing any research or citing authors. This ethical dilemma has caused many universities to require professors to check each student?s paper against a program that looks for work published on the web or elsewhere. It would seem that work can no longer be regarded as genuine until verified.

This argument begs the question, ?Aren?t all new ideas really old ideas that have been twisted or changed a bit?? How else can innovation take place if someone can?t borrow an idea that already exists and add to it? I guess the question is,? What rights does the owner of that idea or work have if it is borrowed?? Lydia Pallas Loren (?The Purpose of Copyright? Open Spaces Magazine September 2, 2003) says, ?The misunderstanding held by many who believe that the primary purpose of copyright law is to protect authors against those who would pilfer the author's work threatens to upset the delicate equilibrium in copyright law.? She goes on to say that this law gives many corporations monopolies that exploit the public.

There must be a balance between giving credit to someone for his/her accomplishments and allowing others to improve that work by borrowing the idea. Recent laws have changed the length of time that work stays copyrighted and have made it very difficult to use the work even when the proper procedures are followed. I think that these laws are not in the interests of the public or technological innovation.
